MISP
Open-source platform for storing and sharing threat indicators.
Published by MISP project.
In short
MISP is a free, open-source platform for collecting, storing, and sharing indicators from incident and malware analysis. The project site listed release 2.5.47 when this page was reviewed. You run it yourself. It is built so analysts can exchange structured information with detection tools and SIEMs. An indicator in MISP is a lead from a feed or a colleague. It is not a verdict on an address.
Product pricing strategy
02
Free
MISP is free. You do not buy a seat to use what the project publishes.
The software is open source and free to run. Commercial support exists. This listing does not quote a support price.
Utility and features
03
The MISP project describes the software as a place to collect, store, distribute, and share indicators and threat information. The audience on the project README is incident analysts, security staff, and malware analysts. The same text says the point is structured sharing, and that the data can be consumed by intrusion-detection and log tools.
- Structured indicators. Events, attributes, and the project’s taxonomies and objects. The value is the structure, not a single search box.
- Sharing. Communities exchange events. A feed is someone else’s collection. Read who published it.
- You host it. The software is open source. The project site also points at commercial support for teams that do not want to run it alone.
The website is the project home: features, data models, taxonomies, galaxies, objects, and documentation. Release 2.5.47 was the “latest release” line on that site during this review. There is a commercial-support link for organizations that want help running it. That is support, not a price this listing quotes. OpenCTI is the neighboring platform when the work is a knowledge graph rather than MISP’s sharing model. VirusTotal is still the lookup for a single file.
- 1
Read the documentation on misp-project.org before you install.
- 2
Stand up an instance for a team that is allowed to hold the indicators you plan to load.
- 3
Subscribe to a feed you can name, and keep the producer next to the event.
- 4
Export toward the detection tools you already run, instead of treating the UI as the last step.
Caveats
04
MISP is free software for sharing structured threat intelligence. The value is the events your instance and your communities contain. An empty attribute is an empty database, not a clean indicator.
Feeds disagree and go stale. Correlation inside MISP is only as good as the attributes people typed. Do not enable a random feed and then auto-block the internet from it. VirusTotal and MalwareBazaar are external checks, not MISP attributes until you create them.

Potential use cases
06
- An incident produced indicators and the team needs them in a form other analysts can query. Create a MISP event, attach the indicators you actually have, and tag the source. The output is that event. Pivot a hash to VirusTotal or MalwareBazaar for context, and store the MISP attribute as your record. A feed you enabled is not ground truth. Open the source object.
- You already belong to a sharing community. Publish or pull an event under that community’s rules. The output is a structured object your members can see, which may be wrong if the publisher was wrong. Do not paste a sensitive incident into a community you have not read the terms for.
- You want to compare an IP or a hash against feeds you chose to trust. Search MISP. The output is the events that contain it, with their tags. A hit means ‘someone in this community asserted this,’ not ‘this is malware.’ Read the event. OpenCTI is the pivot when the job is a graph of reports rather than an event database.
Hard cases
The case where the first result is easy to over-read.
An old event blocks a shared host
A feed event from two years ago lists an IP that is now a cloud provider’s front end. The correlation lights up a domain you operate. Open the event, look at the date and the publisher, and do not push that IP into a block rule because MISP correlated it. Mark the attribute as decayed if your process has a way to say that. The warning is the event. The action is a human decision.
Questions
Is MISP free?
The software is open source and free to run. Commercial support exists. This listing does not quote a support price.
Does MISP replace VirusTotal?
No. MISP stores and shares indicators your community cares about. VirusTotal is a multi-engine lookup for a file, URL, or address.
