Moody's Orbis
Private-company data. Formerly Bureau van Dijk.
Published by Moody's.
In short
Moody's Orbis page, opened on 18 Oct 2026, describes a database of private-company data that also covers listed companies. It says Orbis was formerly a Bureau van Dijk flagship solution. The public action is Request a demo. No dollar or pound price was printed on that page. The page does not show a company record. A demo is not a search this listing ran. Any row in Orbis would be the vendor's standardized copy of source data, and it would still need the register that issued the fact.
Product pricing strategy
02
Premium
The Orbis page did not print a currency amount on 18 Oct 2026. Request a demo is the action. A Bureau van Dijk price from an old PDF is not this page. A Moody's credit-rating product is not this database. Ask the quote to name the jurisdictions, the ownership module, and the update frequency. Write demo and the date until the quote arrives. Do not fill the blank with Sayari's unpublished price or with OpenCorporates' £2,250 API plan. Those are different contracts.
Utility and features
03
The product page on moodys.com calls Orbis a database of global private company data and says it covers listed companies as well. It says the records are captured, treated, appended, and standardized. The history line is explicit: formerly a Bureau van Dijk flagship solution. The button is Request a demo. This listing did not request one and did not see a workspace, a company count, or a price.
- Moody's name, BvD history. The page says Orbis was formerly a Bureau van Dijk flagship. The publisher line on the page is Moody's.
- Private and listed. The page says the file covers private companies and listed companies. It does not print a count.
- Demo, no price. Request a demo is the public action. No currency amount was on the page opened 18 Oct 2026.
Bureau van Dijk is the former name on that page, not a second product you should price separately. Moody's is the name on the page now. Do not cite an old BvD brochure for a figure this page does not print. Do not describe Orbis as the UK register or as EDGAR. It is a commercial file that claims to standardize those kinds of sources. Until you open a record under a contract, you do not have an Orbis row to quote. The page's adjectives are the vendor's marketing. This listing does not repeat them as measurements.
- 1
Cite the Moody's URL and the former Bureau van Dijk name together.
- 2
Ask the quote which ownership and filing fields are included.
- 3
Reconcile any later Orbis row to the official register before you rely on it.
Caveats
04
No company was opened in Orbis for this listing. There is no Tesco row, no LEI, and no officer list from this product to cite. The page says the data is standardized. Standardization can change a name, an address, or a link. When a memo needs the fact, open the register the row cites.
The former Bureau van Dijk name will appear in older work. The page you cite now is Moody's Orbis. Say both, and say which page you opened. A demo login, if you get one later, is still a sample until the contract says otherwise. Do not describe a sample company as a client result.
Potential use cases
06
- A citation still says Bureau van Dijk. Open the Moody's Orbis page and use the name that loads. On 18 Oct 2026 that page said Orbis was formerly a Bureau van Dijk flagship and that the file covers private and listed companies. The button was Request a demo. No company count and no currency amount were printed.
- A budget line needs a number before the quote arrives. Do not borrow Sayari's unpublished price or OpenCorporates' £2,250 API plan. Ask the quote to name the jurisdictions, the ownership module, and the update frequency. Write demo and 18 Oct 2026 until the paper prints a currency amount.
- An older BvD export is about to be refreshed from memory. This listing did not open a workspace, so there is no Orbis row for TESCO PLC to quote. When a contract later produces a row, open the register that row cites. The page says records are standardized, which can change a name or an address.
Hard cases
The case where the first result is easy to over-read.
An old brochure supplies the price
The page opened on 18 Oct 2026 did not print a dollar or a pound amount. A Bureau van Dijk PDF from another year is not this quote, and a Moody's credit-rating product is not this database. Keep the former name in the sentence only as history. The publisher line on the page you cite is Moody's.
Practitioners using it
Posts on X from people describing a concrete use. The quote is the post. Likes and reposts are the counts saved with it, not a live total. A label marks a creator, a maintainer, a vendor, a partner, a data partner, or an investor.
We use @TraseEarth to identify 39 firms linked to land use change via key role in supply chains for beef and soy exports (Brazilian Amazon) and wood pulp and palm oil (Indonesian tropical peatlands). We then use LSEG and Orbis databases to trace financial flows and investments. pic.twitter.com/aAZq4TsMjU
To build it we combine a large number of databases from the UK tax authority, both at the individual and at the firm level. We complement it with patent data from the EPO and financial accounts data from firms observed in Orbis. pic.twitter.com/NuVE4TenqJ
Our estimation procedure started with data from 15k+ firms, collected from Orbis, Statista, and App Magic. This is data on revenues by digital sector, revenues by market, and the location of the subsidiaries connected to each one of these firms./4
Using data from the United States ( #Compustat ) and 14 Advanced economies (Orbis), we estimate the impact of monetary policy decisions on firms’ output growth conditioning on their markup levels, and controlling for unobserved confounding factors.
#Orbis firm-level database by the Bureau van Dijk database is a living project with lots of changes being implemented. I shared my experience working with this data and all these issues in several web-casts with the PhD class on Business Data Science at Tinbergen Institute.
