Signatures and protocol logs on a pcap.

Published by Open Information Security Foundation.

In short

Suricata is the open-source detection engine from OISF. The download page on 18 Oct 2026 listed stable 8.0.7, released September 15, 2026, and end-of-life 7.0.17, released July 7, 2026. The GitHub SPDX field is GPL-2.0. The binary this listing ran was Suricata 7.0.3. It read the sample http2_follow_multistream.pcapng, 197 packets and 232268 bytes, and wrote a TLS event whose SNI was www.mozilla.org. No rule file matched, so no signature fired. An event is the engine's record, not an intrusion by itself.

Product pricing strategy

02

Free

suricata.io does not print a price for the stable source tarball. The SPDX field is GPL-2.0. The download page offers the source and points at distribution packages. The 7.0.3 binary was Ubuntu's package. Training courses linked from the site are separate from the engine and were not priced in this listing. Do not turn the absence of a rule file into a paid feature. Rulesets such as a commercial ET feed, if you buy one, are a different invoice. Cite that feed's price from its own page. This engine's download did not show one.

Utility and features

03

Suricata can run as an IDS, an IPS, or a logger. This run was a file read: suricata -r on the Wireshark HTTP/2 sample, with checksum checks off, version 7.0.3 from Ubuntu. The log said it read 1 file, 197 packets, 232268 bytes. It also warned that no rule files matched /var/lib/suricata/rules/suricata.rules, so no rules were loaded. eve.json still contained a tls event. The SNI was www.mozilla.org, the version TLS 1.2, the destination 104.16.40.2 port 443, and the certificate subject included CN=mozilla.org.

  • 7.0.3 read 197 packets. The log line was 1 file, 197 packets, 232268 bytes. Stable upstream that day was 8.0.7.
  • No rules, one TLS event. The rules path matched nothing. eve.json still recorded SNI www.mozilla.org.
  • GPL-2.0. The GitHub SPDX field is GPL-2.0. The download page did not print a price for the tarball.

The download page's stable tarball is 8.0.7 from 15 September 2026. The 7.0.3 package is older than both that stable line and the 7.0.17 end-of-life line. Quote the binary for the run and the download page for the current stable. GPL-2.0 is the SPDX field on OISF/suricata. A TLS event without a loaded rule is a protocol record. It is not an alert. Do not write that Suricata detected an attack in this file. It parsed a handshake.

  1. 1

Read a pcap with the version you name, and keep the no-rules warning if it appears.

  2. 2

Quote SNI from the TLS event only when rules did not fire, and say that.

  3. 3

Add a ruleset on purpose, and cite the ruleset, before you call a row an alert.

Caveats

04

No rules were loaded. The warning is part of the result. A TLS event with an SNI is not a signature hit. The certificate subject in the event includes a street address for Mozilla Corporation. That address is on the public certificate in the sample. It is not a person's home, and it is not a finding beyond what the certificate says.

Version 7.0.3 ran. Stable 8.0.7 and EOL 7.0.17 are the download page. Do not call this run 8.0.7. The sample is a public test capture. Suricata on a live span is a monitoring decision. This listing read a file. An IPS mode was not enabled.

Suricata 7.0.3 read the sample. Local Suricata 7.0.3 on 18 Oct 2026. The log says it read 1 file, 197 packets, 232268 bytes, and that no rule file matched /var/lib/suricata/rules/suricata.rules. Captured 2026-10-18. Source: local run for this listing.
Suricata TLS event for mozilla.org. The same 18 Oct 2026 run. eve.json contains a TLS event with SNI www.mozilla.org and destination 104.16.40.2 port 443. No rules were loaded, so this is a protocol event. Captured 2026-10-18. Source: local run for this listing.

Potential use cases

06

  • You want TLS metadata from a pcap and you do not have a ruleset yet. On 18 Oct 2026 Suricata 7.0.3 read the sample, logged 197 packets and 232268 bytes, and warned that no rule file matched. eve.json still held a TLS event with SNI www.mozilla.org, TLS 1.2, and destination 104.16.40.2 port 443. Call that a protocol event.
  • A ticket says the engine detected an intrusion in this file. No rules were loaded, so no signature fired. Add a ruleset on purpose before you use the word alert, and cite that ruleset. The download page's stable release the same day was 8.0.7, from September 15, 2026. This run was 7.0.3.
  • The certificate subject includes a street address. In this sample it is the public Mozilla certificate, including CN=mozilla.org. It is not a person's home. Do not promote it into a finding beyond the certificate. GPL-2.0 is the SPDX field. The download page did not print a price for the tarball.

Hard cases

The case where the first result is easy to over-read.

A TLS event is filed as an alert

The log said no rules were loaded. The eve.json TLS row recorded the Mozilla SNI. That is a protocol event from Suricata 7.0.3. Stable 8.0.7 and end-of-life 7.0.17 were on the download page and were not the binary. Do not drop the warning, and do not call this run 8.0.7.

Questions

Is Suricata free?

The download page does not print a price for the source. The SPDX field is GPL-2.0. This listing ran Ubuntu's Suricata 7.0.3.

Did Suricata alert on the sample?

No rule file loaded, and the log said no rules were loaded. The eve.json TLS event recorded the Mozilla SNI. That is a protocol event, not a signature alert.
