Wayback Machine
Historical copies of public web pages from the Internet Archive.
Published by Internet Archive.
In short
The Wayback Machine is the Internet Archive’s public archive of the web. You give it a URL and it shows captures over time, when it has them. It is free. A CDX API lists capture timestamps for people who need more than the calendar view. Not every page was saved, and a capture is what the archive fetched, not a notarized original.
Product pricing strategy
02
Free
Wayback Machine is free. You do not buy a seat to use what the project publishes.
Yes. Browsing captures and the public CDX API are free. The Internet Archive is a nonprofit and takes donations, not a per-lookup fee.
Utility and features
03
Brewster Kahle’s Internet Archive has been storing public pages for decades. The Wayback Machine is the interface: a URL, a timeline, a rendered copy. For OSINT it answers the questions live sites refuse. What did this bio say last March? When did the “about” page drop a name? Did this PDF URL exist before the site redesign?
- Calendar view. The bar shows days the archive fetched that URL. Open a capture and note the timestamp in your citation.
- CDX API. Lists captures for a URL or a prefix. Use it when you need every snapshot, not the one the calendar happened to highlight.
- Gaps. Robots rules, site blocks, and simple bad luck mean the page you need may be missing. Say so. Do not invent the earlier text.
Coverage is uneven. Sites opt out. Pages behind logins were never fetched. A capture can miss images or include a banner the archive added. The CDX and Availability APIs are free and are the right path for a list of timestamps. Save Page Now is how you ask for a capture today; it is not a guarantee, and you should not use it to launder a page you were not allowed to retrieve. Intelligence X is the neighboring tool when the material is a leak rather than a normal webpage.
- 1
Paste a specific URL, not a vague site name, into web.archive.org.
- 2
Open the capture closest to the date you care about and record that timestamp.
- 3
If the calendar is empty, try the parent path or the CDX API before you conclude the page never existed.
- 4
Cite the archive URL and the capture date, and keep a copy of what you relied on.
Caveats
04
The Wayback Machine, run by the Internet Archive, stores what its crawlers fetched. It does not have every page, every date, or anything that lived behind a login. Owners can exclude their sites.
A capture is a copy, sometimes incomplete, sometimes with archive chrome. It is not a notarized original. Save Page Now asks for a capture now. It is not a guarantee, and it is not a way to launder a page you should not have retrieved. Intelligence X is the neighboring tool for material that is not an ordinary webpage.

Potential use cases
06
- A page was edited or deleted and you need the earlier text. Paste the URL into the Wayback Machine and read a capture near the date you care about. The output is that capture, including whatever the archive added. Pivot to Intelligence X if the material is a leak or a document that never lived on a normal webpage. Coverage is uneven. A missing date is not proof the page did not exist.
- You need to know when a claim appeared on a company site. Walk the timeline and record the first capture that contains the sentence, plus the capture before it that does not. That pair is the output. It is not a legal dating of the sentence. Sites opt out, block the crawler, or only get partial captures.
- A public document URL now 404s. Check Wayback for the file URL, and if a capture exists, save the citation with the capture date. Pivot a profile photo URL the same way when the question is whether it was live in a given week. Do not use Save Page Now to archive a page you were not allowed to retrieve. A capture can miss images and can include the archive’s own banner.
Hard cases
The case where the first result is easy to over-read.
The capture contradicts the live site and both are incomplete
The live page dropped a name. The nearest Wayback capture is eight months earlier and is missing the images. You cannot say the name was removed on a particular day. Say: the name is absent on the live page as of your visit, and present in the capture dated X, which does not include the whole page. Look for a closer capture. If none exists, that gap is the finding.
Questions
Is the Wayback Machine free?
Yes. Browsing captures and the public CDX API are free. The Internet Archive is a nonprofit and takes donations, not a per-lookup fee.
Does Wayback have every page?
No. It only has what was archived. Private pages, opted-out sites, and plenty of ordinary URLs are missing.
